‘How do you pray for the first time?’ She thought. ‘Is there some kind of method to it? Maybe there’s a beginner’s prayer I should say, although no one’s told me about a beginner’s prayer.’

‘Well, in the movies, people always get down on their knees, so maybe I should start there?’

She got down on her knees and sat there for a bit.

“This can’t be right” she said aloud, “it’s extremely uncomfortable on my knees and I don’t feel any closer to God.”

She got up and sat on her sofa, took a sip of water from the cup on the nearby table and picked up the notes she had made.  She figured, she was about to talk to God – Almighty God, Creator of the universe, Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End! Surely she had to have some notes with her, you know, just to cover the basics, and in case she forgot something.

Suddenly looking at her notes, she felt like a nerd. Whoever heard of making notes to talk to God?! “I’m sure the pastors of this world do it all the time.” The sarcastic tone in her voice made her feel even more foolish so she put her notes down and picked up her bible.

Before flicking through some of the pages she thought she’d better have a plan. She was stalling for time and she knew it, but come on! Talking to the dude who had knit her together in her mother’s womb was a pretty big deal, and she wanted to make a good impression.

“Maybe I should read something from the bible, and then ask God about it, show him that I’m familiar with his work and stuff . . .??? No. It’ll sound like I’m trying to impress him.” She looked around and let out a big sigh.

This was getting ridiculous; she knew how to have a conversation. She’d had many conversations with friends and family and if this God she’d heard so much about truly loved her as much as this book lying in her lap professed he did, then she should be able to just be herself! And He would accept her with open arms and an open mind.

‘Alright,’ she thought, ‘I’m going for it.’

“God? . . .Sir, my name is Annie, and I’ve heard a lot about You. I’ve decided that I’m going to give You a chance. To see what You’ll do really. I’m not completely sure where a relationship with You might go, but I’m willing to take it for what it is and see if I like it.”

As she continued to pray, she felt a calm feeling spread throughout her entire body.

‘This is how you talk to God’ she thought, and kept on going.

And all that time, God was smiling.
